MTN Making Internet Best For All, Find out why!

The need for fast and reliable internet has caused an eruption among the telecom players in Ghana. Each tries to play the leading role in making internet available to their customers and providing them with the excitement that comes with it. The world is being run by technology so it is essential that communication sees different phases of that in Ghana.

MTN Ghana’s Internet Festival (MTNiFest) took place on September 1, 2014. It is aimed at leading the delivery of a bold digital world with the objective of creating awareness about the internet and most importantly increases the usage of data services on their network.

According to the CEO of MTN Ghana, Mr. Serame Taukobong “over the years, we have seen very positive results from iFest month activations and this has contributed to the significant increase in data subscriptions and revenue”. It is evident with plethora of many social platforms we have. You cannot afford to be left out in this trend therefore, it is reliably true that telcos have registered significant amount of new users and rise in revenue. The CEO added that this has “contributed 17.4% of total revenues for MTN Ghana for the first half of 2014. MTN currently leads Ghana’s data market with 50.54% market share”. Last year at iFest, MTN Ghana recorded unprecedented number of new data subscribers. This was close to 25,000.

This indicates that iFest has come to stay and the CEO promised that they will do everything necessary to give their cherish customers that unique feeling as being part of the MTN Family.

The thirst for internet or data usage is not different from Ghana as the rest of the world. Ghana currently stands at 145th in the global internet rankings with 12.3% internet penetration, according to the “Global Internet Society’s internet rankings. Forecast done by industry researchers on mobile data traffic has shown that there is an exponential growth in the next few years with regards to the increase of smart devices on the market. According to Mr. Serame Taukobong, “this requires mobile operators to increase the capacity of network with enhanced technology to be able to meet the demand” from the customers.

The demand for data or internet has increased immensely because as of Nov 2011 there were only 525 subscribers but the availability of smartphones have realized a growth of about 1.7 million in Jun 2014. This has been the result of MTN strategic partnership with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as Tecno, Huawei and Nokia.

The growing demand for internet has been a challenge for many telcos so in order to meet this target, “MTN continues to make strategic ad systematic investments in our network to support growth and ensure improved customer experience. We currently have over 1,137 3G sites and more than 4,000 kilometers of fiber deployed across the country.” This was stated by the CEO.

The Cooperate Services Executive Cynthia Lumor also added that ifest which comes off every September is a means of promoting the use of the internet. As a leading telecommunication company in Ghana they believe is their duty as MTN to appraise Ghanaians on basically how to take the benefit of internet. The internet enhances productivity, helps with cost saving and contributes to the general development of our country so the more people that use data and internet the more the country reaps the benefit.

According to Raul DE, the Chief Marketing Officer for MTN Ghana, “the month of September is a month of what we call internet festival or iFest, during this period, any time you recharge; there will be 20% bonus on data. As this is not the only good thing happening in the month, there are also many contests such as Selfie contest, Opera Mini contest such that those who use opera mini can follow and win, there is also data clinic which will enable subscribers to know how to use the internet, get connected and enjoy the internet, what do you know contest run on radio and TV which is”. These contests will make subscribers win fantastic prizes and also enjoy the month with MTN.
